Are We There Yet?

In honor of the long car ride Mom, Kimmy, and Jeff took yesterday, the long car ride my family is taking on Saturday, and dad's future airplane ride home from Kuwait, (They are going to let him come home eventually, right?), I propose we take a moment to recall memories of family car rides from when we were all younger... and dad did all the driving. (cringe)
Driving with young children is NOT an easy thing to do. The kids in our family are particularly impatient. We did not have such things as Leapsters, iPods, and DVD players. We couldn't even read books. We would have all hurled all over the car from motion sickness!
When we asked that dreaded question, "Are we there yet?" dad would make us watch for the green signs for the number of miles left on the trip. Then he would tell us how many miles per hour he was driving. He would make us calculate how much time we had left. (The stem of my complete loathing for story problems.)

I think we listened to that Alvin and the Chipmunks Christmas tape about 100 times on the way to San Diego. Do you think mom and dad would start twitching and rocking back and forth if we played them that tape now?

The one memory that sticks out in my mind above any other is the night we drove home from Las Vegas. Two words- Night terrors.
Little Chad, he had to have been about 3. He made that trip a living nightmare. It was hell on wheels! He can thank mom for not letting us strap him to the top of the car.

Holy hell. The night terror drive was definitely as labeled. I wanted to kill the boy. What in the hell was he so afraid of in his unconscious state?! He's lucky to still be alive!
